A porsche design SSD. Definitely a lose/lose purchase as there is no good excuse for this lol. Option A: You’re the guy who bought a hard drive to match his Porsche. Option B: you really want a Porsche, but this SSD is the best you can do for now...

Computer people: why is this so cheap? Is it meant for backup only? I built my first rig back in October but am still a total noob. I was there to buy a second SSD for my machine: intel 500gb for more than double the price of the flat 6 powered one pictured above.

$84? Is it a 128gb? That’s a little overpriced but not terribly

Ah ok, low GB hence the price. All of the real ones in the case you had to have someone unlock were much larger so I was confused by the price

I have a Pininfarina designed 500GB USB drive I use for my Wii

Pininfarina is cooler than Porshuh Design anyway

Agreed, Pininfarina is an actual design house so that’s legit.

Porsche Design, founded by Ferdinand Alexander “FA” Porsche (better known as “Butzi”, a nickname he came to hate) used to be a separate company with no managerial or financial connection with Porsche AG. So it was a legit design studio indeed (whether you or me liked their designs for sunglasses, pipes, watches or fountain pens is immaterial).

Now they are owned by Porsche SE, or whatever they are called these days. FA Porsche died a while ago anyway.

In the same way they did contract engineering for other companies, Porsche AG used to do contract design work through their Porsche Style division. For instance, certain models of Linde forklifts or the cockpit layout of certain Airbus aircraft were done by Porsche Style.

I feel like this explains a great deal.

If they’re going to charge a premium it’d be nice if they tried a little bit. It’s box-shaped just like every other hard drive enclosure or external HD I’ve seen. They should be doing crazy things like making an HD enclosure out of a scale model 911 (obviously the drives go in the back) or mounting HD RAID arrays into Turbo Carrera wheels (or heck, build a whole PC into it) and then charge even more money.

Both the wheel PC idea and the rear “engine” HD are brilliant ideas haha
